For me, every weekend is a binge weekend. And there’s nothing I love more than unplugging and settling in on my couch to escape into another world of a great TV show for a while.
Finding something to watch is never a problem for this voracious consumer, and lucky for you, I have just watched three solid shows on Prime Video that I can personally recommend.
Here are three binge-worthy shows you can devour in a weekend on Prime Video.
Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal
If you’re in the mood for some great stand-up comedy, Jimmy O. Yang: Good Deal will keep your ribs tickled from start to finish.
Most of us nerds know him as the smart-mouthed antagonist Jìan-Yáng from HBO Max original comedy series Silicon Valley, whose sole purpose on Earth is to annoy the ever-loving Christ out of T.J. Miller’s character, Erlich Bachman. As a shady Chinese app developer, Yáng’s comedy is straight out of left field. He seems nice and quiet, but really, he’s a diabolical jerk with the best sense of deadpan humor since Dexter Morgan.
In his debut stand-up comedy special, Yang schools us on what it’s like to be Asian in America, giving us his comical take on Asian representation, explaining how rap videos taught him to speak English, and walking us through hilarious interactions with his immigrant parents. He even gives his thoughts on the one and only Matt Damon.
As a comedian, Yang has great timing, even better punchlines, and he boasts some witty, insightful commentary. There’s no political agenda here, folks—just some high-quality comedy from a different perspective, and with profound understanding.
Sprung
Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a good ole American crime comedy show, especially when it’s the product of the mind behind hit sitcom My Name Is Earl, Greg Garcia. Sprung is an excellent choice of shows to binge over the weekend.
The Prime Video series tells the story of a man named Jack (Garret Dillahunt, of Fear the Walking Dead) who is released from prison early due to the pandemic. Seeing as how he isn’t the only one, the series follows this unlikely group of harmless inmates as they reintegrate into society during the worst possible time. While some want to turn their lives around, others can’t wait to get back to their old ways and start planning jobs.
Hoping to avoid living another crime-filled life, Jack decides to crash with his former cellmate, Rooster, played by Clean Slate’s Philip Garcia, under one condition: Jack must join the criminal enterprise Rooster has created with his mom, Barb (Martha Plimpton, of Task). Reluctant but willing, Jack and the motley crew of criminals join together to put their illegal skills to good use.
Sprung features a dynamic blend of crude humor and well-executed sentiment that reminds us of all the foolish things we did as a result of the confusion over what is needed to survive the virus. It features a fresh concept with tight writing and excellent music, not to mention a comedically gifted cast led predominantly by Plimpton. I promise, you won’t stop laughing, and you’ll be sad when the season ends.
The Peripheral
If you’re a fan of shows like Black Mirror, you’re going to want to add The Peripheral to your list. The sci-fi series is loosely based on the 2014 best-selling book of the same name by author William Gibsons.
In The Peripheral, Chloë Grace Moretz stars as a young woman named Flynne, who discovers a secret connection to an alternate reality as well as a dark future of her own. Set in a small town in the near future, it’s a time when technology has subtly altered society. When Flynn becomes involved with a mysterious gaming company, she discovers the game is actually a real-life scenario in an alternate London in the year 2099, where she’s in control of an android body.
The Prime Video series is a captivating science-fiction thriller that dives into contemporary issues like the exploitation of resources across timelines and technological manipulation. Fans of mind-bending narratives with complex concepts and mounting suspense will love where this story goes, and you’ll also appreciate the stunning visuals.
The Peripheral also features performances from Jack Reynor, of The Perfect Couple, Alexandra Billings (Never Have I Ever), and Black Rabbit’s Chris Coy.
Prime Video isn’t just chock-full of good shows to watch. Don’t forget about those cool features that will help improve your streaming experience. Now get going and watch your heart out!
