Wemo Is Ending Support for Devices as New as Two Years Old

If Wemo smart plugs and switches have been a staple of your smart home setup, you may be in for a rude awakening. Belkin is ending support for a bunch of Wemo devices, including some that are only a couple of years old.

Belkin, the company behind Wemo, informed customers via email today that it’s pulling the plug on technical support for a range of its Wemo products. Starting January 31, 2026, many of your Wemo devices will effectively become much dumber, losing their connection to the cloud and, by extension, to the Wemo app, remote access, and even your voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home. Belkin is citing the evolving tech landscape as the reason for this move. Essentially, they’re shifting their focus and resources to other areas of the business. If your Wemo product is still under warranty on or after that January 31st cutoff date, you might be eligible for a partial refund. However, Belkin will not take refund requests until after the cutoff date.

If you’ve ever gone down the rabbit hole of smart home gadgets, you’ve probably run across devices that require a “hub.” You might think, “Why would I buy something that requires additional hardware?” I think you should seriously consider a hub.

There’s some good news if your Wemo device was set up with Apple HomeKit before the shutdown date. Those devices will continue to hum along using HomeKit’s local control, which doesn’t rely on Belkin’s cloud services or the Wemo app. This also goes for Wemo’s newer Thread-based products (model numbers WLS0503, WSC010, WSP100, WDC010), which will keep functioning through HomeKit without a hitch.

Until the shutdown date, your devices should continue to work as they always have with the Wemo App and other integrated services. But once that switch is flipped, anything relying on cloud connectivity—like Google Home, Alexa, or the Wemo app itself for remote control—will cease to function. The Wemo app won’t get any more updates after the cutoff date.

Belkin will still offer technical support and troubleshooting for your Wi-Fi-based Wemo products up until January 31st. If you’ve got Wemo devices in your home, your best bet is to check if they support HomeKit. If they do, you can continue to use them with the Home app. For those out-of-warranty devices that won’t work with HomeKit, or if you simply can’t use HomeKit, you’ve got some e-waste to recycle.

This is a huge bummer, especially if you’ve built your smart home around Wemo devices. It’s unfortunately the risk that comes with devices that rely on the cloud to function. When the company keeping that cloud up and running decides they’re done, so are you.
