What is Ceramic Shield 2? The iPhone 17’s updated screen protection explained

Apple has unveiled the new iPhone 17 series at its annual hardware launch event.

While many devout iPhone users will likely already be familiar with Apple’s Ceramic Shield technology, which has coated iPhones since 2020, Apple has now launched an upgrade with Ceramic Shield 2.

But what is Ceramic Shield 2 and how does it work? Which devices will sport the new screen protection?

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Ceramic Shield 2 below.

What is Ceramic Shield 2?

Ceramic Shield 2 is Apple’s latest screen protection technology, and can be found within the iPhone 17 series, including the highly anticipated iPhone Air.

Apple promises that Ceramic Shield 2 should offer up to three times the screen durability to the original Ceramic Shield technology, which Apple claims is tougher than any other screen display technology currently on the market.

While Ceramic Shield 2 will be found on the front of the iPhone 17,  the iPhone Air benefits from the screen protection technology on the back too, which Apple promise will ensure the handset remains durable despite being so thin and lightweight.

How does Ceramic Shield 2 work?

Apple explains that Ceramic Shield 2 is made possible thanks to its Apple-designed coating, which is bonded to Ceramic Shield at the atomic level. This specialised ceramic layer, Apple explains, adds hardness and resistance to the display, protecting it from everyday scratches.

Not only that but the iPhone 17’s Ceramic Shield 2 display is also fitted with a seven-layer anti-reflective coating which helps reduce glare too.

Which devices will feature Ceramic Shield 2?

At the time of writing, Ceramic Shield 2 is found within the iPhone 17 series. However, we expect the technology to become the new standard from Apple, and will likely be found within upcoming devices such as iPad.

It’s worth noting that MacBooks don’t sport Ceramic Shield technology.
