Canon’s latest full-frame mirrorless camera is here, and it’s aimed squarely at photographers and videographers who want serious performance without going full flagship.
The EOS R6 Mark III builds on the R6 line’s versatility, packing a 32.5-megapixel sensor, 7K video recording, and a faster CFexpress Type B card slot, all for a $2,799 body-only price. It’s also available in kits with the RF 24–105mm STM lens ($3,149) or the RF 24–105mm L lens ($4,049).
It’s a solid leap from the previous 24MP model, putting the R6 III right between the R5 Mark II and Canon’s entry-level full-frame bodies.
You get more resolution without the R5’s $4000-plus price tag, and Canon says it’s still capable of maintaining its top burst speeds – 12fps with the mechanical shutter and up to 40fps electronically, even at the higher resolution.
Video shooters also get a healthy list of upgrades. The R6 III can now capture up to 7K/60p RAW and 4K/120p, with support for full open gate recording, giving you extra flexibility for cropping and reframing in post. Canon’s Log 2 and custom gamma profiles return, joined by a few thoughtful hardware tweaks: a tally lamp to indicate when you’re recording and a move from micro HDMI to a full-size HDMI Type A port for more reliable external monitoring.
Autofocus has been tuned, too. The R6 III lets you register a person’s face so the camera can prioritise tracking them, which is ideal for event or wedding shooters who can’t risk losing focus mid-shot.
The biggest design change is in the card slots. Canon has dropped the dual-SD setup in favor of one CFexpress Type B and one SD card slot. It’s faster, which helps explain the longer burst capture times, but it also means pricier media and a bit more juggling between formats.
There’s a new lens, too
Alongside the new camera, Canon announced the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM, a surprisingly affordable $469.99 lens that still manages a bright f/1.2 aperture. It’s not weather-sealed and relies on in-camera corrections, but it could easily become a favourite for portrait shooters looking for creamy bokeh on a budget.
The EOS R6 Mark III launches November 25, while the new lens is expected to ship in early December. Together, they show Canon tightening its mid-range game, bringing higher-end features to more accessible gear without skimping on performance.
