Given the nature of my work, I’m fortunate enough to get offered review units of all sorts, which certainly include some weird and experimental gadgets. With AI now in the picture, the variety of offerings is only getting broader. But even then, an AI-powered pen wasn’t something I ever expected to end up reviewing. That was until the Flowtica Scribe arrived, which is an AI-powered recording pen that is designed to “blend the familiarity of handwriting with the intelligence of modern machine learning.”
The prospect of a physical pen being AI-powered alone was enough to pique my curiosity. And while the concept sounded intriguing right from the start, I initially struggled to understand why anyone would actually need something like the Flowtica Scribe. But after spending the last few days playing around with it, I’m beginning to see its appeal…sort of.
About this review: Flowtica provided MUO with a Flowtica Scribe for review. The company had no input in this article. All opinions are my own.

The Flowtica Scribe lets you capture anything, anywhere
At first glance, the Flowtica Scribe is no different from a regular pen. You can use it to take notes, doodle, do a linear algebra exam, or quickly jot down your to-do list for the day — pretty much anything you’d do with an ordinary pen. While it’s no surprise that a pen costing $149 feels a lot more premium than one you’d grab at a stationery store in terms of build quality (which, for the record, is great), that’s hardly what makes it interesting.
The pen comes with a built-in microphone that lets you start recording with the click of a button. The content you record is then uploaded to Flowtica’s app (available only on the Apple App Store for the moment), where it’s transcribed and summarized with AI. When using the pen for the first time, you need to pair it with your device by downloading the Flowtica app.
Once you create an account and navigate to the Flowtica Scribe section, you simply need to press the Scribe’s top button, and it’ll begin pairing. Once you’re done with the onboarding, you’re ready to start recording. To do so, all you need to do is hold the same top button on the Flowtica Scribe for two seconds, and the LED will begin flashing red.
You can now sit back and let the Scribe record everything. The Flowtica Scribe claims to offer “crystal-clear AI noise cancellation,” and to my surprise, it mostly delivers. I used it to record lectures in noisy halls, surrounded by people talking, chairs dragging, and the occasional ringtone, yet the playback was impressively clean.
When it comes to battery life, Flowtica claims the Scribe can record up to 30 hours of continuous recording and over 100 hours of total audio capture on a full charge. Once you’re done recording, all you need to do is press the same button for two seconds.
An interesting feature of the Flowtica Scribe is FlowMark, which lets you highlight important moments while recording. For instance, say you’re in class and the lecturer is about to explain something especially important. All you need to do is hit the button on the side, and that section will be bolded and italicized in your notes, and color coded in the transcript.
Its AI features are good enough
But have the potential to be great
The Scribe’s job itself ends at recording — everything beyond that is handled by Flowtica’s AI, which you’ll find in the app. Once your recording is uploaded and processed, it gets transcribed and summarized. When you open a recording in the app, the first thing you’ll see is the summary. To access the transcript, all you need to do is swipe right.
What’s interesting is that the summary isn’t just a wall of text summarizing everything you recorded. It’s structured neatly with bullet points, key highlights, and even Action Items (which I personally am a huge fan of). This makes it a lot easier to skim through and find what you’re looking for without listening to the full audio.
When you tap the horizontal three dots at the top-right corner of a recording, you’ll see a Personalize Notes option. This lets you tweak the structure of the notes the AI generates, like having Key Takeaways First or a Step-by-Step structure. You can also leave it up to Flowtica to decide.
You also get the option to choose the level of detail: Concise, Standard, or Detailed. Additionally, you can select whether you’d like a Formal & Polished or Conversational & Casual tone. Otherwise, you can stick with the Default mode. You can also explain any specific instructions you have in the Tell Us More section.
Some of Flowtica’s AI features are particularly great, like its ability to automatically recognize when something needs to be categorized as an action item. It lists all of them in a separate section of the app and even gives you reminders if you’ve specified a time for when the action item is due.
For instance, something I’ve been doing lately is using the Scribe to record my to-do list the night before, and Flowtica automatically breaks it down into actionable tasks inside the app. The next morning, I can just open the Action Items tab and see everything neatly organized, complete with reminders for anything time-sensitive.
It’s a surprisingly practical use case that makes the Scribe feel more like a productivity assistant than just a recording tool. That said, I do think Flowtica’s AI features could be better. For instance, I’ve tried out the Plaud Note (a portable recording device too that works pretty much exactly like this tool) and reviewed it over at XDA, and the Plaud’s AI features are better.
For instance, you can view your recoeded content in a Mind Map structure, generate summaries in different templates specific to the task you’re doing, and even ask the AI questions about the recording. So, I definitely think the Flowtica Scribe has room to grow in that area.
Its features don’t really have much to do with the pen aspect
I wish the AI worked with your writing
Now, when I heard AI pen, I thought the AI aspect would have something to do with, well, writing. I’m not sure what exactly I was expecting (or maybe it was too futuristic), but perhaps something that could digitize handwritten notes in real time using AI, or a feature that could understand context, like recognizing when you’re jotting down a task versus an idea and automatically sorting it for you, would’ve been really cool.
Unfortunately, you’ll find none of that in the Flowtica Scribe. The pen doesn’t actually do anything smart when it comes to writing; it’s merely a recording device, and all the AI magic happens on the app side.
That said, the writing experience in the pen itself is fine. It feels smooth, comfortable, and well-balanced, much like a premium regular pen. You get five refillable ink cartridges in the box, so you won’t have to worry about running out of ink anytime soon.
The concept is essentially recording something and jotting it down simultaneously, which makes sense. But I still wish it offered a bit more intelligence directly within the pen itself.
Should you buy the Flowtica Scribe?
You should buy the Flowtica Scribe if:
- You want a smart recording device that automatically transcribes and summarizes audio.
- You like having actionable notes, highlights, and reminders generated by AI.
- You value a smooth, premium-feeling pen for regular writing alongside recording.
You should not buy the Flowtica Scribe if:
- You expected AI features to enhance your handwriting or writing itself.
- You want advanced AI features like mind maps or interactive queries within the app.
- You don’t attend a lot of lectures, meetings, or situations where recording and AI summaries would be useful.
