Immich, the self-hosted alternative to Google Photos and other media cloud storage services, just released a big update. Immich version 1.140 has a new read-only mode, a way to add missing GPS data to many photos at once, and some other helpful improvements.
First, background synchronization has now been enabled for users on the beta timeline. The changelog explained, “New assets are now detected and pushed to an upload queue, which will be handled automatically by the OS. Some tasks, such as local and remote data sync, now also run in the background periodically. So that, as soon as you open the app, the newly taken assets are immediately available on the timeline.”
Immich 1.140 also introduces a read-only mode, for those times when you want to show photos to someone but not allow them to delete or modify images—giving your kids the phone to look through vacation photos as one example. After you double-tap on the profile photo in the app, read-only mode is activated and all the action buttons are hidden.
The last major new feature is a location management utility, giving you the ability to find and edit missing location data in photos captured on a certain day. For example, if you have many images you knew were at a spot in Yosemite National Park but didn’t include GPS data, you could select them in the utility and add the location metadata in a few clicks. You can find it in Utilities > Manage location in the web app.
There are some other small changes in this release, too. The web app now has better caching with an updated service worker, calculation errors with storage quotes have been fixed, and other labels and animations have been improved. There are a lot of bug fixes.
The developers said in the announcement, “This release continues the ramp-up effort to bring the beta timeline up to the same feature parity as the old one, while also addressing as many bugs as possible. Thanks to our active contributors, some cool features also made their way into this release. We encourage all Immich users to switch to the beta timeline and use it to help us identify and resolve issues.”
